Woman Arrested After Trying To Sell Newborn On Facebook For $15,000
Facebook is a service that’s used to bring people together – to help long lost relatives find each other and to help old friends reconnect. In July we heard about the son who found his birth mother on Facebook 36 years after she gave him up for adoption and in September a son who was stolen by his father during a custody battle found his mother through the social network after 12 years. These stories are amazing and heartwarming, but every so often we see the social network being used in a way that is so horrible it makes us cringe.
Recently police arrested a woman who tried to sell her newborn son to a 54-year-old man for $15,000 and posted the plans on Facebook. Bridget Wismer delivered her baby on August 31, but the newborn had to remain in the hospital because he was born addicted to opiates. Wismer was released before her son.
According to court documents, the 33-year-old left her child in the hospital with John F. Gavahan, a bookie known for selling prescription drugs, and left for a casino in Philadelphia. She asked for $15,000 for the newborn but Gavahan added an additional $2,000 for being allowed to sign his name on the child’s birth certificate.
Upon Gavahan’s arrest he revealed to police that he wasn’t the baby’s biological father because he had never had a sexual relationship with Wismer. Wismer was arrested on Saturday following a month long investigation and an emergency motion was filed to modify her bail. The pair was charged with felony dealing in children and conspiracy.
Deputy Attorney General Phyllis Scully believes that Wismer’s $750 bail is low for the state’s guidelines which have a maximum bail of $6,000 for a felony dealing in children offense. Scully also recommends that a judge order GPS monitoring of Wismer to ensure her presence at future court dates.
Currently, Wismer’s family will be allowed custody and visitation of the child, which a prosecutor states could give Wismer access to him, though there is an order in place for Wismer to have no contact with her newborn son.
What is wrong with people I mean are you kidding me
