WARNING: ‘Eat for Free at Pizza Hut!’ Scam Spreads Through Facebook
Facebook scams offering free things are pretty common and spread throughout the social network like wildfire. Who doesn’t want free stuff? It’s a pretty safe bet that if something seems too good to be true, like free tickets to Twilight Breaking Dawn or free Subway gift cards, it’s a scam.
One of the most recent Facebook scams to hit our News Feeds claims to offer a coupon for a free pizza at Pizza Hut — but be forewarned, there is no free pizza involved. The scam, which was first spotted by Sophos, will appear in your feed as a post titled “Eat for Free at Pizza Hut!” The post will read “Take advantage of this special Pizza Hut offer! Receive a FREE pizza coupon today! Act quickly before the supply runs out. With only a few coupons left, they’ll go fast!”
If you click on the link you are sent to an address labeled freepizzaoffer.net. From here your anti-virus software might stop the page from loading. My Symantec Endpoint Protection stopped the page from loading and reported a Facebook Likejacking Attack. If your virus protection doesn’t catch the attack you’ll see a page that asks you to click a Facebook Share button and comment on the post in order to get the coupon. If you do this, the scam will be posted onto your Wall, spreading to your friends. If you do share this post make sure to immediately delete the post from your Wall in order to prevent it from spreading to your family and friends.
