Man Writes Fake Facebook Post About Kidnapping Ex-Girlfriend, Arrested On Drug Charges
If you’re abusing drugs in your home, you probably wouldn’t want to create any reason for the police to pay you a visit, but alas, criminals are sometimes really, really dumb. Don’t they know that people will see what they post on Facebook? Instead of keeping a low profile, a 38-year-old drug user from Chicago posted something to his Facebook Wall that lead police right to his doorstep. No, he didn’t post that he was using drugs; instead he posted a detailed description of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend and holding her hostage in his basement.
Douglas J. Martin claimed he was only fulfilling a creative writing assignment when he posted on Facebook that he was holding the Korean female captive. Of course, not everyone took the joke so lightly and someone who had read the post alerted police. When they arrived at his home, they didn’t find anyone trapped in the basement, instead they found 14 medicine capsules in small clear plastic bags in the downstairs bathroom as well as pill bottles filled with marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The capsules were later found to have contained heroin.
Riverside Police Chief Tomas Weitzel confirmed that Martin’s statement was only meant to be part of his creative writing project and it wasn’t factual. He also believes that the post was created specifically to get a rise out of Martin’s ex.
Martin was arrested and charged with possession of heroin, drug paraphernalia and cannabis. After his arrest, Martin’s ex-girlfriend was contacted by police and she revealed that she had not seen him in over 5 years; however, he had recently started harassing her via telephone.
Drug arrests that occur because of Facebook posts aren’t uncommon. A teenager was recently arrested after a boy posted to his Facebook Wall looking for drugs and police saw the posting.
