Man Arrested After Hitting His Wife Because She Didn’t Like His Facebook Status
The Like button is typically seen as a positive Facebook feature that’s pretty hard to argue about unless of course you use it sarcastically, which we’ve probably all done on occasion. Messages, comments and chats are where the real stuff happens – where most arguments that spill into real life begin. On this occasion there was no chat that escalated into a caps-locked screaming match nor was there an untasteful comment or series of angry messages. This time, something as small as the tiny Like button in the corner of a status caused a physical altercation between a man and his wife.
Police were first alerted of an altercation when neighbors called with reports of a woman yelling. When the police showed up, the woman, who had an obvious red mark on her cheek, told the officers that she had recently separated from her husband of 15 years. He was visiting her home to drop off their children, but he arrived drunk. According to Dolores Apolinar, she would not let her husband inside of her house because she was on house arrest and didn’t want to get in trouble. Benito Apolinar forced his way in, yelled at her, pulled her hair and punched her in the face — but according to Benito Apolinar, this was not the case.
After police arrested Benito Apolinar and brought him to the station, he told them that he had been living with his wife for a week and that the argument started over a Facebook Like. He posted a status update on his page referencing the anniversary of his mother’s death. The post was well-received among his friends and garnered a bunch of Likes and comments but none from his unsympathetic wife. According to reports, he told her, “That’s amazing everyone Likes my status but you. You’re my wife. You should be the first one to Like my status.” Benito Apolinar admitted to hitting Dolores Apolinar in the face after the argument escalated, but she hit him with her cell phone, and he had a visible scratch on his eyebrow.
Benito Apolinar is due in court in December but unlike most Facebook arguments, there is no digital trail of evidence. Sadly, Facebook leads to quite a few physical altercations. In July, 2 teenagers got into a knife fight because of an argument that started on the social network and September saw a 50-person brawl that started exactly the same way. If there was a dislike button, you can bet that those people would be clicking it now.
Facebook is just a big problem in reality. There’s privacy problems, people being caught and put to jail from doing something stupid in facebook, its just a mess. I have a facebook but when google plus is finished im gonna switch to then cuz it has more privacy.
