Facebook Acquires Friend.ly, Q&A Service To Remain Open
Facebook has acquired social Q&A service Friend.ly, the companies have announced. As a result of the acquisition, the Friend.ly team will be working on new projects at Facebook, but Friend.ly will remain open as a separate service. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Friend.ly offers you the ability to connect with others by asking and answering questions on its platform. After connecting your Facebook account to Friend.ly, you can answer questions about yourself, your Facebook Likes or your Facebook friends. You can also suggest a new question for the Friend.ly community to answer.
You can give someone else’s answer your seal of approval by marking it as “Funny,” “Smart” or “Cool;” say that you agree with the answer by clicking “Me Too!;” or click the “Hug” button to offer sympathy or a sign of friendship. The aim is to help you get to know your friends better and perhaps meet some new people. Friend.ly revealed in a blog post last month that it had 25 million users.
Facebook, which confirmed to TechCrunch that Friend.ly will remain open, said in a statement that:
We’re excited to announce that we recently acquired friend.ly, a Silicon Valley startup that created a really compelling way for people to express themselves and meet others through answering questions. We’ve admired the team’s efforts for some time now, and we’re looking forward to having Ed and his colleagues make a big impact on the way millions of people connect and engage with each other on Facebook.
Friend.ly raised $5 million in funding earlier this year from investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Balderton Capital, SoftTechVC and several angel investors.
Facebook has made several acquisitions in recent months, including group messaging app Beluga (which led to the launch of Facebook Messenger), digital book publisher Push Pop Press, software design company Sofa and the talent behind the recruiting network Pursuit. In August, we reported that Facebook wanted to make around 20 acquisitions in total this year.
I have to wonder if the 10-strong Friend.ly team will be working on the Questions product, which received an overhaul back in March. Perhaps we will start to see a integration of Likes into Questions, which would certainly help to increase adoption of the social Q&A feature.
