Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu To Hold Google+ Hangout
The Dalai Lama will take part in a live Google+ hangout Saturday, where he will be having a conversation with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The hangout is taking place as part of the Inaugural Desmond Tutu Peace Lecture, which is being held in Cape Town, South Africa.
The hangout will begin at 10:30 a.m. South African time (4:30 a.m. EDT) and a link to the hangout will be made available on the Dalai Lama’s Google+ profile around 20 to 30 minutes before it begins. Google Senior Vice President of Engineering, Vic Gundotra, confirmed that the event will be an on-air hangout, meaning that anyone can watch it. He also revealed that a video of the event will be later made available to those who are not able to watch the event live.
Tutu said in a Google+ post that the Dalai Lama is not available to attend the lecture in person and that’s part of the reason why Google+ is being used to host their conversation. The Dalai Lama has a notable presence on the Web, from a Twitter account with more than 2.5 million followers to his own custom short domain name.
Google+ launched on-air hangouts on the same day that it went into open beta last month. The first on-air hangout was held by Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am.
