Soccer Player Under Investigation After Saying 9/11 Wasn’t A Terrorist Attack On Twitter

When will people learn that if they’re in the public eye, there are some things they should never, ever say? Yes, there is something called “Freedom of Speech,” but there is also something called “common sense” that people frequently forget to exercise. A Liverpool FC player apparently missed the memo and now he’s being investigated for inappropriate tweets about the Sept. 11 attacks on New York.

Nathan Eccleston, who’s a striker for Liverpool FC, tweeted to his almost 40,000 followers saying that he thought the Sept. 11 attacks were not carried out by terrorists. He tweeted: “R.I.P all 9/11 victims my thoughts are with their family’s and all those that was affected by this tragic accident!” He then explained why he chose the word “accident” over “attacks.” He said, “I aint going to say attack don’t let the media make u believe that was terrorist that did it.”

According to the Daily Mail, Eccleston deleted the tweets shortly after he posted them, which leads us to believe he was either embarrassed by his poor use of English or received numerous complaints (the latter is probably the truth). Either way, he wasn’t sorry and posted yet another tweet. He wrote:

If you don't like what I have to say un follow me !!

Liverpool FC has launched an investigation after being notified of these posts and hasn’t yet decided what would be an appropriate course of action.

Unfortunately, Eccleston’s Twitter flub isn’t uncommon and many athletes run their mouths on the microblogging service and later, regret their statements. Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall faced a similar predicament that caused him to lose his endorsement deal with Hanes when he tweeted a controversial statement about the death of Osama bin Laden. Like you’d expect, he later tried to explain himself but the damage was already done.
