INFOGRAPHIC: What You Need To Know About Facebook, Google+ Privacy
Facebook has long been slammed for its sometimes confusing and ever-changing privacy settings. However, many users are hopping aboard Google+ and have a whole new set of rules to learn. Some revere Google+ as the epitome of privacy and security, while other people believe that as long as you have your privacy settings in check, the information you’ve given Facebook is on complete lock down — but which is really true? This infographic which was first published by SocialTimes outlines all of the potential security threats on Facebook and Google+ so you can decide for yourself.
We already know Facebook has a lot of information about us, after all we gave it to them, but just how much do they actually use? Facebook knows what you look like and what your friends look like — their controversial facial recognition system proved this. Facebook also guesses your interests based on your friends’ interests even if you haven’t given the social network any information. Your phone number and contact info is available to Facebook Developers (though that information is not public unless you want it to be) and you can mark your location using Facebook Places. The Like button, which enables Facebook to track your habits on other websites, is actually illegal in Germany and warrants a 50,000 euro fine!
Google+ is a whole different type of privacy, though Facebook recently adjusted their privacy settings to mirror that of the rival social network. Google+ offers no anonymity - pseudonyms will get you booted from the site - and there’s no way to automatically exclude certain circles from your updates. Anyone can add you on Google+ and you can’t prevent people from adding you to circles, but Google does show you how much information it has about you if you visit Google’s Dashboard.
