Foursquare Global Hackathon Winner Revealed As ‘Plan Your Next Trip’ Scoops Top Prize
Earlier this month, Foursquare held its first global hackathon from which several interesting apps have emerged. Since that weekend, Foursquare has been trying out the more than 90 apps that were submitted from all over the world, looking at factors such as utility, execution and overall value. Now, the location-based service has revealed the winners of the hackathon.
Plan your next trip, which helps you create a personalized two-day travel itinerary for your next trip using Foursquare’s Explore API, won the grand prize. The app was developed by Benjamin Netter from Paris, who wins a Foursquare championship belt and a dinner with Foursquare co-founder Naveen Selvadurai in New York City.
The other grand prize finalists were Sqavenger and Intersquares, each of which will be rewarded for their efforts by becoming part of the new Platformer Foursquare badge.
Nasdaq, one of the sponsors of the hackathon, awarded a cool prize to Near.co for the best hack that was created using the venue Push API. The team behind the app is being given a trip to New York to see their app being featured on Nasdaq’s big screen in Times Square. Near.co aims to help store managers replace their storefront with a digital screen, so they can display info such as opening hours and Zagat ratings as well as the name and profile photo of a person who has checked-in on Foursqaure.
The winner of the Twilio prize — a chance to meet the Twilio team in New York City — went to VenueMachine, an app that lets venue owners recognize and reward influential visitors as they visit in real-time. The VenueMachine creators are being given $500 in Twilio credit, as are the teams behind Sqavenger, fourhealth, Bimbimbab and Postsquare.
Meanwhile, 12 other apps were identified as People’s Choice Award winners, following an online poll. Those apps are as follows:
- Gettogether — an app that provides an interface for scheduling events with your friends.
- Magic Muggle Clock — This displays your friends’ recent check-ins on a clock like that looks similar to the Weasley family clock found in the “Harry Potter” series.
- How ___ are you? — This app combines your check-ins with data to show you demographic information at the places you visit.
- PlaceFace — This switches your profile picture based on the category of the place you have most recently checked into.
- Photosquare - Flick through photos from venues close to your location using your iPad and add those venues to your To-Do list.
- DigiDJ — This is a mobile app which lets you request songs at venues you’ve checked into.
- 4SQSign - A neat little hack that updates your email signature with each check-in.
- Check Me In - This is an iPad hack that lets merchants help customers check-in easily. What’s cool about this is that you simply have to point your profile photo towards an iPad at the venue to check-in.
- 4square TV - This generates a video that highlights your recent Foursquare activity.
- Hear I Am - This helps you find new people nearby who you share similar musical tastes with.
- One More Check-in - Simply put, this lets you see how many more check-ins you need to unlock particular badges.
