Twitter Acquires Social Discovery Tool Bagcheck
Twitter has acquired search and discovery startup Bagcheck. While it’s unclear how the microblogging service plans to use the startup, the platform allows users to create a list or “bag” of their favorite products for specific activities. For example, a user could make a collection of kitchen tools and include their favorite pots, pans and utensils then share their favorite products with their friends. Other users can suggest things to add to that bag or create a similar bag. If you like lists from a specific user, you can follow them.
As part of the acquisition, Bagcheck co-founder and CEO Sam Pullara has joined the Twitter engineering team. Bagcheck will remain available as it previously was before being acquired and include all of the same URLs for the time being. This means that you can still share the links to your favorite bags and have the same profile URL. However, Twitter is planning to change things in the future, so Bagcheck created an instant export feature that allows users to export their bags as HTML and JSON files.
Twitter has been working hard to expand their advertising program, and it’s unclear where Bagcheck fits in. In May, the microblogging service acquired the Web advertising company AdGrok and in July they acquired the social media aggregator BackType.
The financial terms of Twitter’s acquisition of Bagcheck are undisclosed.
